The Indira Gandhi International Airport which is situated on over 2,000 ha in the New Dehli capital of India is the main civilian and its busiest airport for the Capital Region of Delhi India. The airport which was originally named the Safdarganj airport in 1930, was in 1962 was renamed the Palam Airport before being renamed in 1986 to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in honor of the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Since then the IGIA which has been maintained and operated by the Delhi International Airport Private Limited and has become one of the leading airports in India used for domestic, international, cargo and privately chartered flight since 2009.

Facts About the Indira Gandhi Airport

  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport was first operated by the Indian Air-force.
  • Today the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is managed by a group of companies headed by the GMR Group, Freeport, and Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad. The airport which was developed by the public and private conglomerate Delhi International Airport Limited who procured financing, designing and construction is licensed to operate the Delhi airport for a contract period of 30 years with concession to extend its operation for another 30 years.
  • In 2014 the India’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was ranked as the world’s leading airport handling between 25 – 40 million passengers. On April 28 at the ACI Asia-Pacific/World Annual General Meeting in Jordan, the Indira Gandhi International Airport was also awarded the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) by the Airports Council International (ACI) as the world’s best airport in India and Central Asia and for the Best Airport Staff in India and Central Asia at the United Kingdom-based consultancy Skytrax World Airport Awards in 2015.
  • It is estimated that between 2014 to 2015 the Indira Gandhi International Airport handled a total of as much as 40 million travelers headed to 58 domestic and 62 international destinations. During this period, the airport recorded an average of 885 flights daily and handled over 690,000 tonnes of cargo.
  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport hosts a total of 56 international carriers and six domestic carriers. The airport which also serves as the primary hub for the airlines Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Vistara is capable of handling large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport has three parallel runways fitted with CAT IIIB instrument landing system on both sides. During the winter season of 2005 the airport recorded a record number of delays due to poor viewing conditions. Since then the pilots for domestic airlines have been trained to operate under CAT-II conditions with a minimum of 1,150 ft visibility.
  • Although the airport has 3 major terminals, Terminal 2 which was opened in 1986, Terminal 1A closed in 2010 and Terminal 1B currently not being used.

Terminal 1 – Domestic:

Terminal 1A which was built in the early 1990s before its closure in 2010 after a fire was used by Air India regional flight. Terminal 1A which has remained closed is scheduled to be demolished on completion of newer terminals.

Terminal 1C, as well as Terminal 1D, are used primarily for the boarding of domestic flight served by the airlines Go Air, Regional IndiGo and Spice Jet. Notably Terminal 1C is dedicated for domestic arrivals and has a larger luggage area to handle the increased domestic luggage. The newly built Terminal 1D for domestic departures was commissioned in 2009 and is the capacity to handle over 10 million passengers annually. The terminal which has 72 Common Use Terminal Equipment enabled check-in counters also has 16 security channels and 16 self check-in counters.

Terminal 3 – International and Domestic:

Terminal 3 inaugurated in July 2010 is to date is the world’s 8th biggest terminal used for domestic and international flights. Terminal which contains 168 check-in counters, 48 contact stands, 78 aerobridges, 54 parking bays 15 X-ray screening areas and 95 immigrations counters serves a a hub for many major operators of international flights as well as several domestic airline operators including Kingfisher airlines, Jet Airways, and Air India. With the shift in operations of all international airlines to Terminal 3 in late July 2010, the Indira Gandhi International Airport became the largest aviation hub in South Asia. Future plans for expansion of the airport is set to increase the airport capacity to an estimated 100,000,000 passengers by the year 2030.

Cargo Terminal:

Cargo Terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport managed by the Celebi Delhi Cargo Terminal Management India Pvt. Ltd. in charge of cargo activities and operation. The cargo bay of IGI airport is located 1km away from Terminal 3.
