Charlotte Douglas International Airport: CLT, is a joint civil-military international airport in North Carolina in the United States. Established in 1935 the Charlotte International Airport is one of the largest airports in United States without a nonstop service to Asia and of the world’s most busiest airports in aircraft movement.

Located a few miles from the financial region of the city of Charlotte, located near the boundary of the North & South Carolina is accessible by way of Interstate Hwy. 485, linking to I-85 and I-77 the airport is the largest hub for the American airline US Airways and serves over 175 domestic and international destinations since 2008.

Facts About The Charlotte International Airport

• In 2009 the Charlotte International Airport was ranked as the ninth busiest airport in the United States and the the world’s sixth busiest airport in 2010 in traffic movements. Charlotte International Airport in 2013 was also acknowledged as the world’s 23rd most busiest airport by passenger traffic.
• Operated by the City of Charlotte, Charlotte International Airport was first opened its passenger service in 1936. In 1937 the former major American airline Easter Air Lines began its scheduled passenger service. Today the airport’s original passenger terminals can be found at the American sports investment company, Fenway Sports Group’s Boeing 727 parking area. The airport also serves as the base for one of NASCAR’s largest premier racing teams, Roush Racing.
• In 1941 the United States Air Force took over the airport and established the Morris Field Air Base. During this period the airfield was used for training and antisubmarine patrols by the numbered air force of the United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa known as the Third Air Force.
• In 1954 the airport opened a 70,000 sq ft passenger terminal consisting of two floors with the ground floor used for passenger operations. The terminal included baggage claim and ticketing on each side of an open space which divided the terminal building from north to south overlooked by the terminal’s airline offices and a mezzanine restaurant.
• In 1946 the major American airline Delta Air Lines began its scheduled passenger service.
• In early 1962 Eastern Airlines began scheduled jet flights with the Boring 720 by way of the west pier, Delta Air Lines and Piedmont Airlines the center pier while the east pier was used to serve the United and Southern Airlines.
• Flight schedules for April 1957 show 2 weekly departures by Southern Airlines, 4 by Delta, 6 by Capital Airlines, 7 by Piedmont and 57 by way of Eastern Airlines. Nonstop flights served by the airport did not reach destinations beyond Birmingham, Columbus, Jacksonville, Louisville, Newark and Pittsburg.
• Major renovations at the airport during the late 1960s saw the expansion of the airport with the opening of a ‘unit terminal’ as a replacement for the old west pier. This new ‘unit terminal’ featured 8 gates dedicated to serving Eastern Airlines each with its own departure lounge, snack bar and different baggage claim area.
• In 1979 the airport built a new enclosed concourse parallel to the center pier. The new concourse which contained separate departure lounges, restrooms, and large baggage claim area was used by Delta and Eastern Airlines.
• In 1978 after the removal of government-imposed entry and price restrictions on airlines passenger traffic at the airport doubled resulting in the opening of a new parallel runway and control tower in 1979. Piedmont Airlines that same year chose Charlotte as its base of operations for expansion of its route network. In recognition of this lucrative growth the airport opened a new 325,000 sq ft passenger terminal and was renamed the Charlotte International Airport.
• During the mid-1980s the site formerly used for the old terminal was renovated to serve as a cargo center and the Eastern ‘unit terminal’ removed to facilitate more cargo buildings. The main building originally used still serves as the airport’s office space however the old control tower was removed during the late 1990s.
• Further developments at the airport included a new 80,000 sq ft international concourse designated Concourse D and a continuing expansion of the airport’s central building in 1991 in recognition of the dominating presence of USAir at the airport.
• In 1990 the largest European airline Lufthansa began its Boeing 747 service to Germany. However the service was discontinued until 2003 with the operating of flights between Charlotte and Munich by way of the Airbus A330-300 and the Airbus A340-600.
• In 2002 the airport opened a new Concourse E containing 32 gates. In 2003 the main ticketing hall of Concourse E was extended to allow 13 additional ticketing counters and a security checkpoint. Concourse D was expanded to include 9 additional gates. US Airways that year began its service to Costa Rica, Mexico City and St. Kitts in the West Indies.
• In 2007 Charlotte International Airport was recognized as the fastest growing airport in the United States and one of the world’s 30 most busiest airport by way of passenger traffic. In the spring of 2007 the airport began construction of a fourth runway to allow three independent approaches. The runway which is expected to increase airport capacity by as much as 33 percent was initially opened in January 2010 for visual approaches only later gaining approval for instrument approaches in February just a month later.
• Offering one of the Best Airport Views in the United States, Charlotte International Airport is one of the Nation’s few airports with a public viewing area where visitors can watch aircrafts arriving, taxi and departing by way of its runway 18/36C.
• Charlotte Douglas is one out of a small number of major airports with an airport museum located on the field. Established in 1992 the Charlotte Douglas International Airport Museum features an extensive collection of over 50 aircraft and photos as well as a sizable aviation library with over 9,000 volumes.
