Operated by the Shanghai Airport Authority and located at a distance of about 19 miles east of the city center occupying a 10,000-acre site adjacent to the eastern Pudong coastline, the Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the aviation hub for Asia and the main international airport serving the city of Shanghai.

The airport which is used as the main hub for Air China, as well as for Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern Airlines is also used as a primary hub for the privately owned airlines Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines. The airport additionally functions as the Asian-Pacific cargo hub for the American cargo airline United Parcel Service (UPS) and the division of DHL Express which was  once acknowledged to be one of the largest express hubs throughout Asia.

  • The Shanghai Pudong International Airport has two main passenger terminals which are flanked on both sides by three parallel runways. Future plans for a third runway is scheduled in 2015 in addition to building an additional two runways and a satellite terminal to increase the airport’s passenger capacity from sixty to eighty million passengers. Other plans for future development include improvements to the cargo area to increase its capacity to handle a freight of six million tonnes.
  • The Shanghai Pudong International Airport handling over three million metric tonnes in cargo traffic in 2010 and serving a total of over three million passengers in 2014 is the fastest growing hub for both cargo and passenger traffic. The airport is the third busiest airport in mainland China and the 20th busiest in the world. Ranked 22nd globally by its international traffic and hosting 87 airlines serving 194 destinations in 2011, the Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the busiest international hub in mainland China with half of its total passenger traffic international.
  • The airport which is open 24 hours is connected to the Shanghai’s urban rail network by way of the east-west Line 2 of the Shanghai Metro network which runs from East Xujing in the west to the airport passing through Hongqiao Airport and the Shanghai Maglev Train which connects the airport to the outskirts of Pudong.
  • The Shanghai Pudong International Airport has three runways. A 4E rating runway which has a length of 13,000 feet and connects to six taxiways, and two 4F rating runways, one which is 12,500 feet in length with four taxiways and the other 11,200 feet long with six taxiways. The airport additionally has 70 boarding bridges and 218 parking positions.
  • The Shanghai Pudong International Airport consists of two terminals. Terminal 1 which was built to handle a capacity of 20 million passengers and consists of 204 check-in counters, and thirteen conveying belts was opened in 1999 along with the 4E rating runway to handle the increase in airport traffic and provide some ease to the airport traffic at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Terminal 2 which is slightly larger than Terminal 1 and primarily used by Air China was opened in March 2008 and handles a capacity of 60 million passengers and over 4 million tonnes of cargo annually.
